Bomb in London

I'm really trying not to get into a flap about this, although I had a jolt when I saw the news ticker about BOMB IN LONDON. News 24 is obsessed with the story, with breathelss reportage of taped-off streets but as we don't know much there seems to be little point speculating about it until we do. Groucho, a poster on urban 75 website has it about right...

''A most likely 'home grown terrorist' bottled it today when a large, or a small, car bomb or potential car bomb, or a car containing gas cylinders and petrol, that might have also contained nails and perhaps a detonator was most likely left by international terrorist elements most probably from Iraq or Birmingham.

Police foiled the attack that might have claimed hundreds of lives, or might have injured passers by, when ambulance workers saw smoke inside the car, that was actually vapour from the petrol, after the car was erratically driven and the driver ran off having either bottled it or left it to go off with a mighty or a smallish bang targeting club goers or on its way to a bigger target.

The car was driven by a suicide bomber who changed his mind when the device failed to go off, or after he crashed the car, having intended to park the car and escape before the potential device or actual device exploded. Carnage was averted as forensic experts, discovering 'what appeared to be a potentially viable explosive device' carried out a controlled explosion manually taking apart the device without needing to blow it up thus leaving vital forensic evidence that may or may not have included nails and a detonator, intact.

So that clears that up!''

I 've had a fair few anxious emails today from people affected by July 7 bombings, with the anniversary coming up, the weather the same as two years ago, it's not a great time.

Hope you are okay Rachel and are relieved that members of the public managed to bring this to attention before anything could go off.

Groucho's speculation is wishful thinking.

While I am bracing myself for being called a "racist" (and may I just remind those who do that islamism is a religion and not a race) this little stunt has the fingerprints of homegrown islamo-terrorists all over it.

And, because it's non-you these days to say it: may I just thank the quick thinking people who called the police and express my gratitude to the police constable who risked his life to save ours.

I expect that rather than thanking the police, there will be someone suggesting he be raked over the coals at the IPCC for not being "sensitive" enough when risking his life.

Why would you be called racist for that? I agree it probably was some home grown islamic dickhead. I also think that we we have to thank the ambulance crewman for his vigilance, and the coppers who risked being blown up when making the car safe. If you think you'll be vilified by us 'bleeding heart liberals' for stating the bleeding obvious then I seriously suggest you stop reading the Daily Mail before you become too parnoid to go outside your front door.

People who like to label people as racists sometimes think in strange ways, unfortunately.

One interesting example was labelling as racist people who pointed out that the Japanese government before and during WWII was a fascist bunch of murderous loonies - rather than a noble bunch of anti-colonialists protecting their wonderful warrior culture. Strange because the whole point was that Japanese people *aren't* naturally a bunch of nutters who murder prisoners etc...

The reason that Islamist terrorists get labelled as such is because terrorists get labelled according to their motivations. The PIRA were called "Republican" terrorists because their primary motivation was the Republican branch of violence against British rule - they are quite socialist and fairly hostile to the Catholic Church as an organisation. The Loyalists were labelled as such because of their primary motivation - note that they are also labelled at "Protestant paramilitaries, because in their case there is a religous motivation. Similarly, Eta are "Basque terrorists" because that is their primary motivation. Its pretty logical and quite fair.

I trust that clarifies matters for you.
