315-306

Sold, to the *Democratic Unionists, for a parcel of promises, our liberties.
What a damn shame.

UPDATE: Come on the Lords, unelected saviours of democracy.
To be fair, that was so narrow, and they were wheeling people in on wheelchairs and dragging them out of bed, that I don't think that has really done Brown any favours at all.

*corrected, ta!

The Democratic Unionists, in fact - although the UUP's Lady Sylvia Hermon also voted in favour of 42 days. Which means that Gordon owes this particular victory, in part, to someone who last week responded to a serious homophobic assault in her constituency by going on BBC Radio Ulster to call homosexuality an abomination and to suggest that the victim might benefit from talking to a psychiatrist acquaintance of hers who has an excellent track record in 'curing' gays: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7447850.stm

Stylish.

It's a sad day for liberty. I will drink a bottle of champagne the day Brown is kicked out of office.

Come a long way from the days when Labour sold themselves as the friends of the Catholic Irish, haven't they?

I see that Nick Palmer MP was proclaiming on polticalbetting.com that he sold his vote for the £3000 a day compensation deal.

"Why Palmer, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for £3000 a day?"

Time to ditch Ulster from the United Kingdom, I think.

So how exactly does paying off the Unionists and somehow getting the support of Anne Widdecombe actually show 'strength of leadership' anyway? Maybe they were all offered peerages, it wouldn't exactly be without precedent...

Somehow, I'm not surprised the DUP support the 42 days, on principle. They were the Unionist party in the 50's 60's and pretty much helped start the 'troubles' So, I guess, with them having managed to have interment ( well over 42 days, you could be locked up for months) to sort out their enemies.

So, it comes as no surprise. But one would have thought that they might have learnt from history that locking folks up does not help resolve the problem, but acts as a recruitment agent.

History doesn't appear to be a forte of NuLabour.
